What are the health implications of prolonged mold exposure?

mold-fort-myers-cleanup-damage-serviceUndetected mold growth within the home can cause major structural damage, but beyond that it can be extremely damaging to human health.

Sometimes when people are aware that they have a mold issue in their home they are unaware of the negative health implications. People may consider the mold problem relatively minor or not an issue of a major concern all while their health is being compromised.

Mold-related illnesses can have the same or similar symptoms to regular ailments that flare up due to external factors such as the weather or pollen.

Some mold-related illnesses come in the form of allergies (runny nose, breathing problems, sinusitis, etc), respiratory illnesses (from a stuffy nose to lung problems), infections, reproductive issues, digestive illnesses, and other life threatening illnesses.

As soon as mold is discovered in the home, steps should be taken immediately to remedy the situation and completely remove the mold from the affected structures.

There are some instances when mold inside of a household can get into the HVAC system allowing mold spores to be dispersed throughout the home in the air. This is particularly bad because it can spread the mold problem throughout the home, putting all inhabitants in danger and structures at risk for potential irreparable damage.

Another major cause for concern when it comes to prolonged mold is exposure is that pets can be negatively impacted as well and could die if the ailments become serious enough.

mold-fort-myers-cleanup-damage-service-naples-fireserviceFireservice Disaster Kleenup recommends calling a mold-removal specialist to assess your mold problem and then properly remove it to prevent it from coming back. It is worth noting that mold forms when there is a presence of excess moisture in the air.

Remember that mold thrives in moisture and that it is essential to find and correct the issue that is allowing excess moisture to form indoors.

If your mold problem is contained within and no bigger than 10 square feet it is possible for you to remediate the issue, however, if it grows any larger you will need to contact a professional.  Fortunately, Fireservice Disaster Kleenup has a trained mold mitigation staff ready to help you with your mold problem!

9 Common Causes of House Fires That You Can Prevent

Fireservice Disaster Kleenup sees many fires in Fort Myers, Naples, Marco Island, North Port and all surrounding areas almost every single day.

This time a year, a lot of the fires are caused by a lightning strike. Lightning is not something you can prevent;  however, here are some of the top other causes of house fires that you can prevent.

fire-damage-cleanup-fireservice-fort-myers-naples-cape-coral-north-port-charlotte1. Cooking Equipment– Make sure that you are using the correct size pots and pans for cooking. Do not leave things on the stove and make sure that the surrounding countertops are clean from paper towels, cloths or oven mitts. If you can’t cook without the smoke detectors going off then pick up take out for the family. I promise they would rather have take out anyways.

2. Careless Smoking– My suggestion is if you are going to smoke then try to do it outside and put you cigarette butts in a wet container. If you are going to smoke inside do so standing or sitting up. We see when people smoke laying in bed or couch that they can fall asleep holding on to the lit cigarette causing a fire to ignite.  Imagine the look on your friends face when you have to tell them that the fire and burnt hair is your fault cause you were smoking.

3. Electrical Equipment– This can be anything that you plug into a wall. Make sure that all the plugs are in good condition and items are powered off when not in use. If electrical item gets warm when not in use unplug and avoid from using.

4. Candles– Limit candle use and make sure that the candles are blown out before you leave or go to sleep. Suggestion that I do is to lay my car keys or phone beside the candle so that I have to see the candle before I leave. A blown out Cucumber Melon candle smells a lot better than chard kitchen cabinets.

5. Children Playing with Fire– Make sure that your kids know fire safety. Also try to keep all lighters and matches out of children’s reach.

6. Inadequate Wiring– If your lights flicker or get dimmer when certain appliances are in use , then have a licensed electrician come and inspect the issue. (Not a handy husband that thinks he knows what the issue is)

7. Flammable liquids– Store all flammable liquids and cleaners in a good location with approved containers.

8. Christmas Tree/Decorations– Keep your tree watered daily. Make sure to inspect lights and wires before hanging them up. If wires , plugs or lights are damaged just dispose of them. Also, do not over load the breakers trying to be the Clark Griswold of the neighborhood.

9. Barbecues– Clean all removable parts with soapy water. Make sure that when grilling that do it away from the house, not under tree branches and as bad as it feels to even have to say it, do not grill indoors.

Fireservice Disaster Kleenup wants everyone to be safe. Make sure that you and your family have a plan if a fire does happen. Call 911 first and then call your local Fireservice Disaster Kleenup office in Naples, Fort Myers or North Port.

Are You a Hoarder? Here Are the Little Known Dangers of Hoarding

The Health & Safety Concerns of Hoarding

A hoarding disorder is when someone is incapable of parting with things. A few major harmful health and safety concerns that arise from hoarding are falling debris, mold and mildew contamination and impeded access in case of emergencies.

When there is a hoarding situation, falling debris can be dangerous especially if there is only 1 occupant in the home. What would you do if you were pinned underneath a pile of fallen stuff? Trip and falls are more likely to happen as well.

The more subtle health hazards are not as visible such as black mold and mildew; they usually go unnoticed at the bottom of hoards.  Mold and mildew inhabits itself into carpeting, spreads into and behind dry wall and can consume the contents in the multitude of boxes that may be in the residence.

hoarding-hoarders-fort-myers-naples-mold-disaster-cleanup-kleenup-fireserviceThe residents of the home are continually assaulted with contaminated air when this occurs.

Service providers such as police, firefighters and emergency medical services increasingly report finding entryways, hallways and rooms blocked because of piles of stuff – knickknacks, electronics, clothes, boxes, papers and garbage. Nowadays, people have more stuff they own.

It’s not just 1 television but 1 in every room of the home, same goes with knickknacks; they have multiple collections of things.

This also complicates the search for survivors in a fire. We must understand fires in a hoard burn much hotter and quicker than a fire in a home where there’s not as much flammable material.

There are shared characteristics that seem to run through all the profiled hoarders.  All hoarders have suffered a loss in the past that was traumatic to them. Some reasons people begin to hoard are usually because of the death of a loved one, a divorce, an illness, a disaster that destroyed all their belongings or perhaps growing up with a parent who discarded their childhood mementos.

If you know someone who is dealing with a hoarding situation, we at Fireservice Disaster Kleenup can assist in getting that home back to a safe and habitable place.

We can clean up the falling debris, remediate the mold and mildew and assist in getting unnecessary contents out of the residence and then cleaning and organizing the remaining contents inside the home.

Hurricane Preparation in Fort Myers: Do You Have Hurricane Amnesia?

hurricane-preparation-fort-myers-naples-florida-fireservice-disaster-kleenup-cleanup-water-flood-wind-removal-damage-clean-upDo you have hurricane amnesia?  When was the last time you witnessed a major storm? Were you even living in Southwest Florida the last time a storm did major damage in the state?  Florida has had eight years of storms staying away and eight years of people moving in. We’re currently living in one of the state’s longest hurricane droughts in history .

Combine that with the huge influx of new residents — and that makes for a lot of residents who have never experienced a hurricane or major storm.

In June of 2014,  Florida Weekly ran an article based on an interview with FPL (Florida Power and Light) officials. At that time they estimated 40 percent of its customer base, or close to 4 million people, had never experienced a major hurricane. The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council also reported a 50 percent turnover rate in demographics every eight years, meaning snowbirds who had previously weathered tropical storms may have been replaced by tropical tenderfoots.

And the Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management statistics showed 90 percent of people don’t even know if they live in a storm-surge evacuation zone.  That is very alarming since the most severe danger comes from the storm-surge flooding.

FPL President Eric Silagy issued this warning in 2014 that is still relevant today: “ It’s not a question of if, but when” a storm will effect us. “We are going to be hit by a storm at some point and that’s why we all need to prepare as if it’s going to be this season.”

Make a plan. Build a kit. Be informed. Get involved.

Here’s Your Plan for Hurricane Preparation in Fort Myers

The American Red Cross suggest the following for a basic “Hurricane Kit” :

Water – one gallon per person, per day.

  • Food – non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, crackers, and canned fruit. Make sure to include a manual can opener.
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries.
  • A first aid kit.
  • Prescription and non-prescription medication items (seven-day supply). Include medical supplies like extra hearing aid batteries, syringes, etc.
  • Copies of important documents, including birth certificates, insurance policies, a medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home and social security cards.
  • Cell phone chargers.
  • Multi-purpose tool.
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items.
  • Extra cash. ATMs and credit cards won’t work if the power is out.
  • Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members.
  • One blanket or sleeping bag per person.
  • Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowls).
  • Maps of the area.

How to Cleanup Fire Damage (without making things worse)

After the devastation of a fire in your home, it can be hard to focus on the next steps you need to take to clean up the fire and smoke damage.

Trying to cleanup fire damage on your own without consulting a professional can cause even more problems. To help with the overall cost and stress, it is best to contact Fireservice, especially if you are planning to file a claim with your insurance company.

Within hours, Fireservice will

  • board up broken windows
  • secure doors
  • patch holes
  • remove any standing water from your home.

You won’t have to worry that your home is vulnerable to further damage by thieves, animals, or the elements.

Fireservice will evaluate the damage done to your home in the fire, and provide you with an estimate for repair costs. This information is valuable when dealing with your insurance company. We can provide you with expert estimates because we have years of experience dealing with fire damage.

Along with removing soot and water from your home, Fireservice will eliminate the odor of soot and chemicals from your home, dry your home with industrial fans and dehumidifiers, and clean affected surfaces with antimicrobial disinfectants.

We will then begin the process of restoring your home to its original condition by repairing walls, floors, and ceilings.

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors

storm damage cleanup fort myers naples floridaWell summer is here in Southwest Florida and it seems like thunderstorms are now an everyday occurrence. If you’re a native Floridian or seasonal snowbird, you know that Florida Thunderstorms can be powerful and not something to mess with. But do you know just how dangerous these storms are and specifically the lightning they create?

Originally from North Carolina, I was shocked to see the strength and destruction that Florida Summer Storms could bring viagra o similares. Doing some research here are some neat things that I learned that might surprise you and educate you at the same time.

There is a reason Florida is titled the Lightning Capital of the US. Each year, there are more lightning-related deaths than any other state. From 2003 to 2012, Florida had 52 lightning-related deaths alone. According to weather officials, it can be sunny outside and you can still be struck. Even if you’re as far as 25 miles from a storm, you’re still within striking distance. So, what shouldn’t you be doing during a lightning-packed storm? Avoid fishing, camping, boating, farming, ranching, the beach, and open fields. In fact, fishermen are 3x more likely to be killed by lightning than golfers.

Why Florida?

Well, on the most basic level, Florida is surrounded by three bodies of water. Therefore, with hot summer weather, the ground heats up faster than water and produces Gulf of Mexico sea breezes. As a result, warm, moist air rises from the surface until it meets the colder, drier air in the atmosphere – voilá, lightning!

Avoid The Shocking Costs

Lightning is not only dangerous, it’s expensive too. One lightning bolt has 1 million volts of electricity and can generate heat 5x hotter than the sun. According to the Lightning Safety Institute, an estimated $2 billion of damage results from lightning strikes each year. Damage can occur miles from impact and can produce shocking costs. In just 2009, homeowners filed more than 185,000 lightning strike-related claims.

Fireservice Disaster Kleenup asks that you and your family stay safe during this stormy season and know that we are here for you if disaster strike 24hrs a day.

Shop-Vac vs. Restoration Contractor

What’s the difference between buying a Shop-Vac and hiring a restoration contractor like Fireservice?

It’s a fair question. A savvy homeowner would leave it to professionals to repair smoke and fire damage, but water seems so much simpler and benign. One could swing by any home improvement store in the Naples-Ft. Myers area, invest in a wet/dry vacuum, and attempt a DIY water mitigation. After all, how much water will a little bit of carpet hold? The answer is surprising. Depending on the material type, nine square feet of carpet and pad can hold up to two full gallons of water.

Consider this example: a pipe bursts and the water saturates the carpet of a 10’ by 10’ guest bedroom. The 100 square feet of carpet and pad of the small bedroom will contain over 22 gallons of water. This is just one room. And this is all assuming the water is shut off at the point of saturation, which means additional standing water isn’t accounted for!

Suppose a homeowner decides the inconvenience is worth the money saved and proceeds with a homespun water cleanup. Once the last few ounces of water have been drawn out of the carpet fibers, the DIYer may deem the job complete, providing the opportunity for structural damage and mold growth. Alternatively, they could leave a fan running, thinking it’s enough to settle the matter.

On the other hand, a qualified moisture analyst can use thermal imaging to determine precisely where a structure has been affected. Drying these affected areas is a two-part process. The structure needs the proper amount of airflow (which common household fans can’t provide), and it needs dehumidification as governed by the principles of psychrometry. Even with state-of-the-art commercial drying equipment, periodically re-adjusted and monitored by trained technicians, this process takes days.

Given all this, it’s clear that water damage needs attention from a restoration company just as much as any other disaster–and the wet/dry vacuum is best kept for small spills in the garage.
